The Lo Down: NBA All-Star Weekend 2018

My experience during All-Star weekend reminds me of the scene in Pretty Woman when Julia Roberts, who played a working girl, goes back into a store on Rodeo Drive that she had previously been mistreated. They refused to wait on her based on her appearance, but she had bought new fancy clothes and went back into the same store and simply said, “I was the same woman you refused to help yesterday. Big mistake, huge!”

When I was let go from ESPN in May 2017, I was at a crossroads. I had just been fired from the one place I wanted to work my entire adult career. In that moment, I decided I’m going to put in the same amount of effort and energy that I had been at ESPN and Fox Sports into my own brand. It was the best decision I ever made. Soon after being let go from ESPN, I found out my then boyfriend had been unfaithful. You know the saying when it rains it pours, it was hailing.

I realized that there was a shift that God wanted me to experience and I embraced it. A few months later I was blessed to form a partnership with the Drew League for the inaugural LoJo Media Sports Journalism Internship program.

Fast forward to All-Star weekend 2018, I had all this anxiety as the week began. I resumed reading daily bible verses and praying when I started to feel overwhelmed because at the start of the week I was speaking on a panel, where no panelists had been confirmed, shooting the second episode of my podcast where my intended guests were unresponsive, and the normal nerves of covering my first All-Star weekend in my hometown.
